What we do

Spindletop works with members of the energy industry and local charitable organizations to improve children’s lives.

SPINDLETOP GIFTS & PROJECTS

Spindletop donations continue to make an impact in the community. Major grants over the years include, but are not limited to, the projects listed below.

Odyssey House Texas

Spindletop Property Donation & Operations
In 1984 Spindletop received a generous gift of property in Harris County which included a 15,500 square-foot warehouse/office facility along with an acre an acre of land. After a study was conducted, the Spindletop Board of Trustees concluded that a comprehensive residential treatment center was needed in Harris County for teenagers who are addicted to drugs and alcohol, and trying to stay clean and sober. Odyssey House was a successful national model so Spindletop donated the property and Odyssey House - Houston became the first of its kind in the State.

Pro-Vision School and Vision Academy

Urban Farm Spindletop Greenhouse
Pro-Vision School and Vision Academy has offered students from the Sunnyside neighborhood of southeast Houston the guidance and support they need to realize their full potential, academically, morally and spiritually. Pro-Vision is an Open Enrollment Charter School for middle and high-school aged boys and girls who are the most vulnerable to the negative forces that continue to undermine their community.

Small Steps Nurturing Center

Spindletop Student Assessment & Therapy Room
Small Steps Nurturing Center’s mission is to provide an exemplary early childhood program to instill and foster the social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of economically at-risk children and their families. Small Steps Nurturing Center operates two preschools for children, ages two through six, for students living in the First, Second, Fourth, and Fifth Wards of Houston, Texas.

Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum

The Spindletop Tower
The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum located in Waco, Texas, is recognized by the Texas State Legislature as the official repository of the Texas Rangers. Throughout the museum are historical displays telling the well documented history of the Texas Rangers and their service in protecting the citizens of Texas, past and present. The Spindletop Tower is located in the museum’s Tobin and Anne Armstrong Texas Ranger Research Center. This space provides a “heritage gallery” and archives to share important documents and collections related to the legendary Texas Rangers.

M.D. Anderson Family YMCA

The Spindletop Dream Field
The Spindletop Dream Field located at the M.D. Anderson Family YMCA was completed in 2014. The $80,000 donation helped refurbish an unsafe playing field into a positive youth sports experience venue for the youth and families living in Houston’s Northside community.

Children’s Assessment Center

Enhanced Technology Digital Conversion Network & The Spindletop Expressive Arts Therapy Services Room
Recognizing the need for advanced technology for the investigation of child sexual abuse, Spindletop donated $450,000 to fund the Children’s Assessment Center’s state-of-the-art forensic interviewing digital conversion project in 2005 and 2008. In 2012 an additional $100,000 was donated for CAC’s expressive arts therapy program.

SPINDLETOP SITE VISITS

Each year, Spindletop Community Impact Partners, Inc. hosts site visits to several youth organizations. our goal for these visits is to show our donors, board members, volunteers, and friends how Spindletop connects at-risk youth to resources that educate, empower, protect and nurture them throughout their life’s journey. These visits are unique experiences where Spindletop friends can learn how their generosity has directly made a significant impact on the lives of children.

Archway Academy- Palmer Drug Abuse Program

For 15 years Archway Academy has provided students who are in recovery from substance abuse a nurturing environment where they can excel in a sober environment in pursuit of their high diploma.  Statistics tell that an adolescent exiting a recovery program and reentering his/her familiar school has an 80% chance of relapse of drug and/or alcohol use within 90 days.  Archway offers young people in recovery, not only the education they need to be successful in life, but the community that allows them to stay sober and flourish. The majority of Archway’s graduates go on to college and many alumni continue to mentor younger Archway students. Spindletop funding to the Archway Academy Scholarship Program allows students to attend the school who may not have had the financial means to do so. Students attending Archway are required to have graduated from a treatment program such as Palmer Drug Abuse Program, resulting in continued support from their peers.

Palmer Drug Abuse Program, which holds an after-school program at the Archway School campus is a support program focused on recovery through acceptance, love, and kindness. Over the past 45 years, PDAP has gone from its inaugural meeting of six teenagers to positively affecting over 1 million youth in Greater Houston and nationally. The Mission of the Palmer Drug Abuse Program is to be the most effective prevention and recovery program helping young people and families avoid or recover from the devastating effects of drug and alcohol abuse. This free and long-term recovery program is of the highest quality and readily accessible to Houston area youth and their families.

Crime Stoppers Houston

Since its inception in 1997, the Crime Stoppers’ Safe School Institute has evolved into a free, year-round program that has educated more than 1 million students in 60+ school districts in the Greater Houston area and throughout Texas. The function of the Safe School Institute is to create a one-stop center for all aspects of school safety. The Institute creates a proactive dialogue with students, parents, school staff and law enforcement and provides students with a safe, anonymous way to report crime and potential dangers on campus.

In 2019, with the assistance of funding from the OTC 50th Anniversary Dinner, Spindletop has made a multi-year pledge to underwrite the Safe School Institute Webinar Series. This series will provide an overview of the Institute as well as necessary tools and training needed to launch and grow individual Safe School Programs – not only in Houston but across Texas and eventually across the US. Participants will be able to watch educational topics specific to cyber safety and bullying, mental health, human trafficking, teen dating safety, substance abuse, animal safety and more. The webinar platform will allow for both engaging live presentations that will incorporate interaction between presenters and participants, as well as static presentations that are pre-recorded for participants to view at any time.

Project CLASS is currently launching a new Animated Children’s Books Digital Initiative. These are children’s books that focus on core-foundation social skills development for children 3 to 8 years old. Michael Gets Mad is the first book offering and focuses on anger awareness and calming down to make good choices. Spindletop has underwritten the printing of this book as well as the animation and Parent & Educator Guide. The next two books are underway and will focus on how to pay attention, follow instructions, accept no, accept feedback, and use eye contact.
