As a parent, nothing prepares you for the words: “Your child has cancer.” In that moment, life changes forever. CanCare, the only organization in Houston dedicated exclusively to providing emotional support to anyone impacted by cancer, offers free, one-on-one time mentoring for patients and caregivers. Through compassionate, peer-to-peer connections, CanCare provides a shoulder to lean on during one of life’s most difficult journeys.
For 35 years, they have stood alongside cancer patients and their families, offering hope, understanding, and strength through shared experience. Yet one ongoing challenge remains: recruiting and training parents who have walked through their own child’s cancer journey to mentor other families facing this devastating diagnosis.
Through funding from Spindletop, this challenge has become an opportunity. Our investment has allowed CanCare to build strong partnerships with organizations dedicated to supporting families affected by childhood cancer. Together, we’ve created a powerful multiplier effect, connecting with more experienced parent volunteers who can provide authentic, compassionate, and lived-experience support to families in crisis.
At the same time, these partnerships have broadened CanCare’s reach, linking families to a comprehensive network of specialized pediatric cancer resources.
