Youth Development Center (YDC) is an afterschool program that offers exemplary academic development to struggling students in grades 1 through 6. While nurturing the whole child, the program focuses on developing literacy and math skills to help students from economically disadvantaged households become successful in school. In April of 2019, Spindletop Army volunteers held the inaugural STEM Saturday at YDC! More than 20 volunteers manned 11 different STEM education related stations. Activities included “drilling for oil” in a layer cake, elephant toothpaste, porosity and more! Students saw that fun and learning can go hand in hand.

“My parents always stressed that education is the key to a bright future and fulfilling career. So many children in the Houston area endure obstacles that transcend access to quality education, and for this reason, I am extremely pleased with the wide array of support that Spindletop provides to our youth living through such a diversity of challenges. Spindletop is and has been an incredible agent for stewards of our industry to help free our youth from the inequity of these challenges and propel them towards quality education and a brighter future.”
