Recent Spindletop Scholarship Program Recipients

Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo

The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo has been rewarding scholarships since 1957 to deserving young Texans through its Educational Fund Program. Spindletop sponsors one scholarship annually for an HLSR recipient based on financial need and academic achievement, and who is pursuing a science or engineering degree.

Lamees Loubani is a graduate of Cypress Fall High School, and she is currently majoring in pharmacy at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. She will graduate with her PharmD in 2022 and plans to pursue a residency program to specialize in clinical pharmacy.

“The Spindletop Scholarship that I was awarded through the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship has been truly a big blessing. Not only has it has alleviated some of the financial stress of pursuing higher education, but it has also provided me with an amazing mentor who’s been very reachable, helpful, and invested in my education and future. One of my favorite memories was having Ms. Constance White join my family and me for iftar (dinner) during the month of Ramadan. Moreover, this scholarship has connected me with an endless network of student scholars and likeminded, driven individuals.” – Lamees Loubani

Texas Ranger Association Foundation (TRAF)

The Texas Ranger Association Foundation Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 to provide scholarships to children of active Texas Rangers. In appreciation for the dedicated service that the Texas Rangers give to the citizens of Texas, as well as the many hours of security the Company ‘A’ Rangers provide at the annual Spindletop events, Spindletop supports the TRAF Scholarship Fund. Each year, children of active Texas Rangers receive this scholarship.

YES Prep Public Schools

The Spindletop/YES Alumni Scholarship was established in 2001 to lessen the financial burden on YES Prep graduates attending a university, especially for those students living far from home. The initial contribution from Spindletop not only impacted YES Prep’s first graduating class, but also served as the vital $10,000 “seed grant”, which has grown to anchor a scholarship fund that awarded well over $300,000 in scholarships in 2015. Each YES Prep senior is required to be accepted to a four-year college or university to earn a high school diploma. Many graduates are first in their family to attend college.

Confidence Koboo attended YES Prep Gulfton and received the Spindletop Scholarship to attend University of Texas at Austin. She graduated in 2019 with a degree in Biochemistry.

“I think I am adjusting to college life really well because I’ve become more organized and I have gotten better at managing my time wisely. My scholarship means that I am able to pay my first housing bill. My family and I are really grateful for this scholarship. I am able to focus solely on getting my education.” – Confidence Koboo, 2017
