Spindletop is proud to continue its annual tradition of Spindletop Summer of STEM, an exciting hands-on volunteer initiative aimed at inspiring the next generation of innovators that brings the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math to children served by its non-profit partners. Through a series of fun and engaging events, Spindletop has the privilege of expanding the STEM knowledge of children from three of our Charity Partners: Youth Development Center; YMCA of Greater Houston; and Periwinkle Foundation. Spindletop’s Army of volunteers led interactive stations, guiding children through experiments and activities that explored topics such as Porosity, Density, Chemistry, Sediment Settling, Insulation, Coding, and more! This unique experience not only introduces these young minds to the wonders of STEM, but also creates lasting memories and opportunities for growth. Thank you to all our volunteers for your dedication to shaping a brighter future for Houston’s youth!
Youth Development Center
On May 18th, 2024, YDC hosted their annual STEM Carnival, sponsored by Spindletop. Spindletop’s financial support helped YDC hold a successful STEM event. Families enjoyed a wide array of STEM activities, including chemical reactions, construction and building projects, sand art, AI computer programming and more. Taking place the Saturday after Houston’s Derecho storm, YDC also provided families with cooling stations, charging stations and food distributions. The day was topped off with a Chick-fil-A lunch and a visit from an ice cream truck, making it a memorable experience for all!
Periwinkle Foundation
As part of our Summer of STEM series, Spindletop volunteers led 40 campers from The Periwinkle Foundation through an unforgettable STEM Day camp. The campers explored fun and engaging science experiments like elephant toothpaste, Lego coding, and the ice cube insulation challenge, bringing STEM concepts to life in a hands-on way. We are incredibly grateful for the energy and dedication of our volunteers, whose enthusiasm made science exciting and left a lasting impact on these young campers!
YMCA of Greater Houston
In June 2024, the Spindletop Army visited the children’s enrichment program to host an exciting STEM Fair. Children ages 5 to 10 participated in hands-on science experiments designed to expand their knowledge of STEM concepts. Volunteers guided them through various topics such as sediment settling, porosity, density, and more. Following the activities, students shared their observations, offering a special glimpse into the new knowledge they gained from the experience.
